Hey all,
Looking at spending a few months pretty much wandering round the north island...
no schedule, just a route and some places to go, take my time and stop when i get tired....
anyone had any experience in doing this sorta thing?
what are the rules regarding camping etc. (can i chuck a swag down by the side of the road just anywhere?)
Cheers,
Trussell (Aust.) |

sorry guys,
that must have been a stupid question...
got a bit excited and didn't bother reading around
got alot of info from the site (good work) but what i was really looking for
was anyone who has spent any time weeks to months on foot without plans as such...
i'm looking at spending 3-4months mainly walking and some hitching
around north island, south as well but prob hitching more in south due to distances.
the idea is to get away from it all, spend some time without anywhere to be,
and nothing to worry about - also keen to spend time getting to know the people NZ.
want to steer clear of the backpacker hostels as much as possible,
just crash anywhere i get tired...
any thoughts, links, experience would be much appreciated
Cheers guys,
Trussell |

| Hi, its not legal to camp where you please on the road side. You can of course play the ignorant card and say you couldn't get a ride which has happened to me a few times. |

| It depends on the local council, but generally no. But if you are in the middle of no where who's going to see you?... It is much easier in the South Island and in particular the westcoast. |

Are there any relevant lonely planet guides or others?
do the shoestring or walking guides cover this sorta thing?
or are they just normal baqckpackers and daywalk guides? |

No I haven't come across any books or sites. I was going to try and get a database going on this site listing free camping spots, maybe when I get back to New Zealand I will give it a shot.
It's is a lot harder if you don't have a car as most land besides the roadside is privately owned and you have to get off the main highways to find somewhere to camp. It is also alot easier to find free places to camp in the south than the north. |
