Hello,

I will be visiting New Zealand for the full month of February, and am trying to figure out roughly what I can do/see in that time period.

I'm planning on renting a car with a friend and splitting our time mostly between the North and South islands.

We are students, so our budget is fairly tight. As such, we'd like to tent as much as possible. I'm an experienced camper, and think we'd prefer that over using the hut system.

However, I was wondering about where we can and can't set up our tent. Are we only limited to designated camp sites? I am assuming that we'll be spending most of our time in National Parks. Basically, my goal is to wake up and not be able to easily see another tent Smile

To answer my own question, I am pretty sure camping is only permitted in designated areas on the Great Walks – but I’m wondering if the same holds true for the other areas.

Thanks! This is a wonderful site – I find it far more informative that any other book or website I have come across. The hard work is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Duncan

Hi Duncan, I just email the Arthur's Pass DoC office and this is their reply.

"Hi Garry

Each National Park will have it's own rules on camping. e.g there is no camping on the Milford Track walk in Fiordland National Park, so I can only tell you about Arthur's Pass National Park.

In our Park there are no restrictions on camping - you can camp where you like in the Park. If you camp near a hut you'll have to pay half the hut fee.

I hope that helps."

So basically yes you can walk and camp where you please in Arthur's Pass at least. I am pretty sure it is like that for the majority of the National Parks.

Wow, thanks a lot for the help!

I just bought our tickets for Feb7-Mar7 - so we're pretty excited.

I have lots of questions, but I'm trying not to flood the forum all at once Wink

Thanks again!

Duncan
