I've read on many sites (including this one) that buying a used car and reselling is a great way to go if you staying in NZ for awhile. What I can't figure out is how this works if your visiting NZ and don't have a permanent address? - in the US you'd never be able to get the car registered and get valid tags. What are the requirements for getting your car on the road in NZ?
My wife, 2 boys, and myself are going to be turing NZ for 3 months starting in September and while we hope to spend the majority of our time on foot and in the water, we want to be able to get from place to place easily.
Thanks for enlightenment anyone can offer. |

To get your car legal you need a WOF (warrant of fitness) which costs about $40, you get this through a garage and registration which you pay through the post office which costs about $200 a year? forgotten the exact price.
When you change ownership papers you can give them (post office) the address of the place you are currently staying. When your registration runs out they will send you papers to that address. But you can just take in your ownership papers to the post office and all your details will be on their computer so you don't really need the papers that were sent out.
Yeah it is pretty slack here in NZ, you should of seen all the fines that used to come though the post at a backpackers I used to worked at. |
