Hi! i'm new here in this forum. Thanks jpe for the great and practical advises. My kids and I just arrived here in NZ last June.
Someone was asking about the school system here. Here's what I learned so far. I had my 2 kids enrolled by the last week of June even though it's the last week for the 2nd term. At first we intended to enroll them in a Catholic School in Papatoetoe. The name is Holy Cross. But they did not accept my kids because they are already full until the end of the schoolyear. I filled out application forms for the next schoolyear anyway. Then we went out to look for a public school that will accept them. We learned that you don't just enroll your child in any public school. They accept children if they are within their zone area. We went to 3 schools before we finally found the right school for them. It's actually a 15-min walk from our house. School time starts at 8:50am until 3pm. I'm in the job hunting process right now so I get to take my kids to school and pick them up in the afternoon. I also learned that schools usually start at the last week of January or 1st week of February and ends in mid-December. Like for this schoolyear, the last day of the school would be Dec. 17. The entire schoolyear is divided into 4 terms (about 2 1/2 weeks @) and for every term there is a 2-wk holiday. Parang sa atin sem-break. But here, it is every after term. The long vacation starts in December.
So there, my school info for those who are interested.
Right now I'm concentrating in my job hunting. I'm in IT too. I was a System Analyst in the Philippines. But, I'm having 2nd thoughts in getting the same job because of the pressure I experienced back in 'Pinas. My responsibilities as a mother was kinda laid back for quite some time because of my work. So tama ka jpe mga data entry and clerical roles muna ang hinahanap ko. I even applied for a laundry assistant (lunok...). Kakayanin ko yan. 'Coz right now I just need what they call the 'NZ experience'.
Btw, if you know of any job re IT support, my husband is looking for one. Right now, he works as an Insulation Installer. He's been here for 1 1/2 yrs na.
Thanks again and good luck in your job hunting too!

Hi Jpe,
You can call me Allan. Im a Video Editor based in Manila currently working for ABS-CBN and I am eyeing to work & migrate there in NZ and I know you can guess the reason why:). I tried applying & doing the "job offer first" through SEEK.com, but unfortunately most of the companies requests me to be there for a face to face interview. Knowing that, I wrote a letter to one of the companies I applied, humbly requesting them to have it in a different way or any other means possible or through phone. My letter goes;
Dear Ms. ___________,
Thank you for your response and time. It is unfortunate that I can not be there physically for any face to face interview with you. However, I will try to apply for a visit visa and hope that I do be granted for that purpose (the Philippines is not included in the free visa policy base on New Zealand Immigration Policy) before the job post expires (News / Current Affairs Editors-FCP job post) being it a rare chance for me to get a better job outside the Philippines, that would fulfill my plans of emigrating.
In view of this, I humbly request your company ___________ through you to reconsider my chances for an interview through phone or any other means available. I modestly believe that having been in the media industry doing my craft, editing (using different industry standard equipments) various program formats such as yours for nearly 10 years, strongly suggests that I am fit for the task (e.g. EDSA 20: Isang Larawan (a Picture), its partly in Filipino & English, you will see my name in the credits: URL link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umh-h8NKLw4 - It is a documentary about the 20th anniversary of the 1986 Peoples Power Revolution in the Philippines). As a reference, you can contact Mr. _________ (________ TV Executive Producer) through: ______-8808 or through his blog http:_________. He is currently an Editor/Columnist for The ______________.
In addition, English is my second language, being one of our official languages (together with Filipino) used in government, education, print and broadcast media, and business as medium of instruction. Because of this, I firmly believe that I will be able to integrate immediately & effectively in the work environment such as yours.
Hoping for your kind consideration.
Sincerely,
Allan ______
Well, unfortunately they did not agree. So what should I do then? should I apply for a visit visa first and do the job hunting technique you suggest:), nice work by the way)?
Should I be granted an interview & an eventual job offer will it be easy for me to get a work permit there in NZ me being already there?
Help me please:) you can email me: edall77@yahoo.com
Thanks & God Bless |

You are very right, joy. That famous "NZ experience". I'm a teacher in a Work To Residence Permit and been here for a month now (and a month of handing in applications - not counting the ones I sent online when I was still in the Phils). I sure do hope I get a skilled job coz that will be the basis, I think, for me to be granted a residency. Nevertheless, I am more than willing to get any legal job to meet my basic needs here. Even if I live with my sister (who is a resident already) but it's entirely different to have money of your own. Need prayers; I hope that my 9 months won't run out on me not having a job -- that would be very devastating.
Cheers to those who are making it well here. |

| hELLO JL! I saw your last post was July 2009, I still hope nandito ka pa sa forum. I am a SPED Teacher here in the Philippines with MA, less than a year pa lang ang experience ko, pero alam mo sobring gigil ako to go to NZ, I already had my NZQA Report, then on the process to apply for teacher registration with NZ TC. Please share with me anything that can be of help, please. I have questions pala, do I have to apply to NZ Immigration for a work visa while I am also applying for a teacher reg? I read from the TC site kasi na after registration daw mag apply ng work permit from NZIS before accepting a job in NZ. Uhh my poor head, I have been extensively researching about the prospect of teaching in NZ. I truly appreciate if you could give me helpful infos. Thank you! |

hi,
i'm an accounting grad, and i applied for a one year study program in EDENZ College in Aukland which also allows me for a 20 hours/week part time job. May i ask you if you have an idea of how much is the rate per hour for a part time job in new zealand. Thank you so much.

I could never imagine going to a strange place alone. The thought itself scares me to death. But you did wonders. You may have gone broke at some point but you managed, and you loved through.
Many times I wish I could be as brave as you but I just don't think I could do half as much. Something else might work for me though. What matters is I get there, and fulfill my dreams. |

the original post was dated 2005..back then nz was a different country.
a country wherein if you came here even without a job waiting for you or even an interview lined up it would still be ok.
but to do this at this time 2011..is purely suicide. nz is barely recovering from a recession. they barely just escaped it and had their recession a bit later than the US had theirs and nz is still in recovery mode not to mention the burden of the christchurch earthquake and the rebuilding it requires.. this means that jobs are scarce as there's just too much competition and little available employment regardless whether you are in IT and the medical field..even nurses are feeling the pinch in terms of hiring having just been removed from the immediate shortage list. nurses are still on the long term shortage list but now there is a condition that you must have 3 years work experience before you can even apply for a permanent residency.
this wasn't the case before. before as long as you had a good paying job on the shortage skill list for as little as 3 months you can get a residency but now some people have been waiting for a year or 2 for their residency.
i have been a resident for almost a year before i told my hubby to come follow me..both of us gained residency despite the fact that he was still in the pinas as i am the principal applicant.
it took my husband another half a year to find a job..he applied to almost all possible job listing he can find and to think my husband graduated with honors from a top philippine school..kahit trolley boy..no luck!!!
he now has a job but it isn't in line with his degree still and it has been difficult to find a job for him cause all the interviews would ask for relevant nz experience..parang catch 26...how can you get nz experience if they don't hire you a new migrant???
as of this blog writing august 2011...i would strongly advise that before coming to nz...
1. make sure you a have enough money to do so..don't sell off your assets yet until you find a job here as you might need to go home.
2. do not come here if you do not have a job offer or even an interview.
3. do not come here if you don't know anyone wherein you can at least crash for a couple of weeks to look for work. rent in nz is weekly and let me tell you what my relatives in ny and san francisco told me.. i am paying rent that is at par with NY and more expensive than san francisco for a house that was built in the 1930s with no central heating!!
4. if your degree needs assessment then have it assessed beforehand prior to leaving pinas..NZQA is the website to go, nz nursing council for nurses and etc. no one will hire you if you do not have the equivalent qualifications. please know part time work here is a pain to get..as a lot of new zealanders are also unemployed and most of their high school students work part time too...remember in nz, there is the kiwi first policy specially for blue collar jobs.
i have a friend that came here on a tourist visa..he was nurse but no nursing council approval..no certificate from a cap school..he was hoping to land a caregiving job. he got the job but immigration will not issue him a visa because the company can not prove there is no kiwi for the job. he was sent home.
please research the real situation in nz right now before deciding to come here if you are on a limited resource. these are very good posts.. but most of them are really dated and old thus does not reflect our current situation in nz. |

1. For migrants, the usual route is the Skilled Migrant Category. New Zealand allows people from other countries that have the skills and work experience NZ needs. You need to apply for it and the NZ Immigration Service will assess if you have the right skills. It goes without saying that a mere college degree alone will not be enough and yes it entails money.
2. NZ employers only sponsor people who are highly skilled in areas that would help local business or economy. NZ has enough workers in non-technical industries so they do not need to hire workers from other countries to do menial, admin or non-managerial work. From personal experience and my friends' experience, those who are in the engineering, scientific, agricultural, medical and those accountants who have overseas exposure are the ones who get "sponsored." They will not "sponsor" if they need a waiter, busboy, assistant or labourer - there are enough people who do those jobs here. |
