jpe,
Wow! It's very educating and helpful to people like us who have been aspiring to explore new challenges in New Zealand. My wife and I, fell in love with New Zealand the moment we did research about the place. We also admire your guts and personality. I'm sure that you are slowly realizing your dream and enjoying every bit of it. I noticed though that you haven't posted lately. But this will not prevent me from seeking some information and advisory from your end, he,he,he. Your hectic schedule I guess is preventing you from doing so. I would like to ask some few questions if you don't mind. Does filipino nurses have a good chance of landing good employment there? Could you provide us information about this New Zealand - based staffing agency Alta Solutions?
This is all for now 'coz I don't want to take much of your time. I hope you could post soon as I'm sure a lot of our friends here will agree that you're being missed here a lot. May the Almighty keep you safe and in control all the time. Ciao!

Hi JPE,
Fantastic information! And great courage too!
I do have a offer of employment with ASB Bank (Albert
St) in Auckland as an internal auditor, initially for
6 months but ASB gave me assurance that it will most
likely be extended 'coz of their growing operations/business. I may fly in this April once my
work visa is approved.
Foremost of my concern is accommodation. Can you recommend places to stay there which I can contact from Manila for reservations. I am looking for a place which is a short distance from ASB Bank, of course under a tight budget.
I would really love to ask a lot about living there,
but I will reserve it later just in case its ok with
you. I don't know anyone in Auckland so I am taking
this opportunity of asking to you.
Again, thanks very much and I hope to receive an
e-mail from you |

Sorry, medyo matagal akong naka login dito..
Big&Small : Yes, I do find a number of openings in Admin & HR but my source is NZ Herald, which you have access to. Browse the Job section online and you'll have an idea. Perhaps Wednesdays and Mondays are good days to check. Sorry if I can't really tell you offhand how recruitment in those areas goes. What I do know is the companies' preference on those who have NZ experience. Doesn't help when you're just starting, as the dilemma of majority of us who came here.
newzealand : i suggest you check the fees on the nzis website to figure out which is cheaper between applying as an individual or a couple. financial preparation is indeed very important. but so is emotional support. it is not easy to start a life overseas, especially if you have ties back home. so anyway, study all angles and evaluate both of your priorities and plans.
Rubben : good luck to your apps
Celeste : good to hear from you! you'll be surprised (or perhaps not), most of the helpful information on starting off here, i based on insights i got from move2nz. do not be intimidated. you'll be surprised at how much an asset an overseas person in our field is valued here good luck to your apps! you'll find work here quite easily, especially if you're not picky in it field.
rey & jenny : yes, unfortunately, there are some denied after the interview. i don't know the details. perhaps corex can fill you in. i also read a blog about that, not quite remember where. wish you well in your interview. if you've provided credible information that satisfies the visa officer, i'm sure you'll be fine.
mackie : how to apply for work permit is on the nzis website. take time to study the details on the website, you'll find the information you need. what i do know is you need a job offer to apply for work. or in some cases, people come here on a visitor visa and depending on the restrictions placed by nzis, you may look for work for a few months. from here, you could then apply for a work visa. link below is for work visa temp.
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/worktemporarily/
chariz : i can empathize with you on the overwhelming information on the application. but until you take time and diligence to study these, you won't be able to start (if you intend to do this on your own, which i highly suggest in any case). ganun talaga, konting hirap lang naman. i'm sure you can find the type of work in it. not sure about mainframe here, but vb is still in demand. have you checked the IT SEEK website yet? that'll give you an idea of the demand. try to tailor your cv/resume according to the areas that the employer or recruiting agent is looking for. key words lang yan minsan. honestly, the job application here is frustrating because while the recruitment websites demonstrate the demand in our field, in reality, companies aim for nz experienced folks. and for those who are physically here. they're hesitant to recruit overseas. if you're vb, try to get as many microsoft certifications and cisco network certifications as you can while you're there (make sure these are globally recognized though)... hope that helps?
http://www.seek.co.nz/
mavi : not sure what kind of advise, as i don't think i'm in the right position to do so. what i do know is that SPED and pre-school is pretty much in demand here, so you'll be fine. perhaps a struggle at first, but once you've gotten your foot in one of the schools and established a few months/years of experience, you'll be highly marketable. you better check the government websites for your bf. i think there is a central recruiting site. as for points, i think you'll need 140 points? please check your consolidated points on the nzis website. also, you might want to see the requirements for de factor relationship requirements of nzis as well. all the best to your applications.
ice_man 72 : how i wish i can help on nurse recruiting, but i really have no idea. if alta has a website, you might want to get intouch with them. from the newspapers i.e. nzherald, i do see a high demand for nurses. but i think you have to be registered though, so you better check that out. when i was in hamilton - i heard from a malaysian migrant that there is a big bunch of filipino nurses working at the waikato hospital and demand is high. he also said it helps to apply directly to hospitals because some don't post their job openings in newspapers ..
all : apologies for being out of touch. wishing everyone the best in their applications and pursuit for a better future.
take care!

good to hear you secured a job. asb is a very good bank to work at.
not sure what type of accommodation you're looking for but if all you want is an affordable pad within the proximity of albert st, cbd, there are many options. there are places that offer short term arrangements, which i'd recommend for you to have an option to move out anytime you want. i'll refer you to the filipinos who live in the city themselves. they managed to get very affordable, decent and comfortable accommodations. contact kindra_tristal, corex and chuhyde also members of this forum. other references are nzherald, realnz, and one which i'll just forward to your email.
wishing you the best settling down here.
regards,

Hello jpe,
I really admired you for sparing time just to help your kababayans who likewise have plans of settling in NZ like me. I really, really appreciate as well your courage of doing things.
I've read in one of your messages that you mentioned your agent's email address. Do you think he/she can help us in looking for some prospective employer? Can I email him/her? Me and my husband are both IT professionals.
Hoping,

Hi JPE,
Am Ana Badilles a food technologist and still on the EOI stage (dec 7, 2005), I just would like to ask if Food technologist positions and automotive mechanic positions there are really very much in demand? Nasa shortage list kasi yun but we have not gotten any job offer yet.
Our family will be visiting nz soon if we will be able to get a visitor's visa.
Can you recommend a cheap place to stay for a family of four for one week? |

Hi ferdinand,
I have read your msg. If you don't mind my asking I would like to know how you came to get the job from ASB. My husband and I are both with Landbank and already have our WTR invitation. We are waiting for our visa right now. But I have apprehensions on migrating to NZ since we'll be totally starting out from scratch. And from this forum, you were the only person I have read who belong to the banking industry. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi jpe,
Codos! If I only have half of your courage. My husband and I have our WTR invitation and are now awaiting for visas. My husband's heart is set on going to NZ but God knows I have my fears. This circumstance have rocked my comfort zone. We're going to a totally new place with no job, no house and knows no one. What can be more scarier than that? I have read in the forum that most people here are IT people. My husband is an agri. engr by profession and I'm an acctg./LLB grad but we have worked with the banking industry for more than 15 years. Do you think we have place in the job market in NZ. Can we contact your agent while we are still here?
Hope I get to meet you and your friends when we get there.

Hi Tin,
Do not be afraid, have courage filipinos in NZ will help you out. Courage or Lakas ng loob is all we got, just think of the good things that NZ could give you. try joining pinoy2nz group and you will find courage thru the groumates there some are in nz na some are still here just like me. They will guide you and definitely will try to pick you up when you get to nz.
Me and my family nga will go there for a visit and have job interviews too so that we could check if we can really make it there. |

Hi Tingting
So you and your husband are from landbank and you are just waiting for your visa? Dont be afraid going here in NZ. I am an early retiree of LBP-Makati. I have been here in NZ for more than a year now. Although my coming here is a lot different from what you are going through though (i came here thru a fiancee visa, then work visa and then PR.
Please email me at pioydeg@yahoo.com
May mga ibang landbankers na andito na rin, although yong isang kasamahan ko before nag migrate na sa Australia after staying in NZ for almost 3 years
I have a job offer before with National Bank-NZ, but I opted to work in government agency...
What I could advise is, when you get here, dont expect that you will get the same position or get the same job that you are doing back home...be open minded, take the risk and accept whatever opportunities that will come your way!
Email me at pioydeg@yahoo.com |

hello guys,
welcome me mid may in auckland, I am coming!!!!
well sensya na ha,, masaya lang me.. may work visa was approved last 21 April (applied in 5 April).. initially for 6 months lang since yun ang contract with ASB as internal auditor.. but ASB assured me that it will most likely be renewed since growing operations nila and they will not shoulder naman daw my relocation if they dont need skilled personnel. so I am banking on their assurance..I am thinking lang na baka they just want to evaluate me first....anyways, i'll take my chances and hopefully I can also find another job dyan...
I'd like to directly thank jpe and carlo jaminola for their help.. you guys are very helpful.. i'll e-mail you personally. of course, yung ibang nag post ng helpful info and experience thanks alot also...
he he he, sya nga pala, wala pa akong accommodation... but I'll take a flat walking distance from CBD (Albert St.).. good thing, sagot ASB one month rent ko.. any suggestion for a place?
also I understand I am coming in during winter season from summer here in Manila, any suggestion on how to cope up with the weather?
actually, di pa ako prepared in a lot of things, so if you guys can give me tips on what to prepare, send me naman...fsdasigao_bsp@yahoo.com is my email.
will contents of CDs be checked? planning to bring in some pirated video trainings related to my would be job? how about if I bring in image files of those CD's?
AGAIN, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE TO THOSE WHO WILL GIVE TIPS.
SEE YOU ALL IN AUCKLAND !
GOD BLESS US! |
