confuse about the visa process...

i am planing to take up temporary seasonal work such fruit picking in new zealand but as i went through the job list, most of them required you to have work visa first before they can accept your application while later i went through the new zealand immigration web site,they said they will only grant you the visa if u can proof u have an employment in new zealand.
therefore my question is whether should i apply the visa first or should i apply for the job first..
