Hi Lee, it all depends on what you are into. I have lived/stayed for long periods in all our cities and I personally prefer Wellington, it is a friendly city and has character which our other cities lack.
Auckland isn't as bad as people not living there say, nice harbour and with 1 million people there is obviously heaps to do, it is also the most expensive to live.
Dunedin (where I grew up) is one of the cheaper cities to live in and it has a good night life for a city of only 120,000(?) people as it is a University city.
I lived in Christchurch for 5 years and the city itself is pretty bland IMO, but it is close to ski fields and Arthur's Pass National Park and a few forest parks, so if you are into hiking or skiing.
When I go back to New Zealand I will proberbly move to Nelson, I lived there for a year a while back. It's a medium sized town (44,000) but if you are into the outdoors it is perfect. There a 3 national parks in a short distance (Kahurangi, Abel Tasman & Nelson Lakes). It is also a holiday town so over summer it gets quite busy and it is known as having a sunny climate.
If I were you I would travel around the county first and get to know each area first. |

| Well the normal haunts you will find in a city, it has a large arts community, good nightlife, a good rugby stadium, the best museum in the country and the people are generally friendly. The weather is a bit stink though, it's not called "Windy Wellington" for nothing. |
