Does anyone recommend renting a car and tenting over renting a campervan?
I plan on visiting this Christmas for 3 weeks and want to (quickly) tour both the South and North Islands, but I can't decide whether we should tent or get a campervan. |

If you can afford a Campervan then personally I would go that way. However if you decide to tent it you can always stay in cabins if the weather turns bad or you want a decient bed for the night, basic cabins at camping grounds cost between NZ$35 - NZ$60 for 2 people. An advantage having a car/tent is you can get to some places where you may not want to take a campervan i.e narrow unsealed roads.
You may need to book both a powered site for you campervan or cabin over the Christmas period. |

Camping/tenting can be absolutely wonderful over the summer time in NZ - lets hope the weather doesn't let us down.
Can I make a suggestion - check out Spaceships as this might be useful for you - as it is really a cross between a car and a campervan.
Which ever option you go - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time |

ello,
i would definitely recommend a Campervan as the weather changes quite a bit in New Zealand. A Campervan gives you the freedom of not finding a Campground/Accommodation as you can also free-camp in New Zealand if you prefer to do so.
We rented a Campervan at www.bedmobils.com and had an absolutely great time. The Camper had heaps of space inside and was still very easy to drive. I would recommend a more compact Campervan such as the Bedmobil as the bigger ones will be definitely harder to drive but the normal vans are really easy to drive.
An important thing is the space to use inside the Camper - especially when it is raining.
Hope that helps

| Hello, we're going to New-Zeland in 35 days and backpacking the whole country. A couple of my friends went to New-Zealand and preferd to stay in a tent. Buying a car seems to be a good deal also cuz you can sleep in the car when the weather let us down. I don't know about your personal situation (Are you alone, Do you have Kids ?) but I will stay with my first idea in stay in a tent. |
