I will be traveling around the north and south islands during November and December starting from Auckland and ending in Christchurch. Are there any recommendations for car rentals? I have notice some companies offer a car exchange in Wellington so you don't have to pay the extra ferry charge for the car. Also do I need added insurance? Thanks in advance for your help.

Ace rentals ( http://www.acerentals.co.nz ) are apparently quite good.

Or for a Van try Excape Rentals ( http://www.escaperentals.co.nz )

Insurance is usually included in the price. Some companies you get the minimum policy and have the option of upgrading it, take it if they offer it to you. Of course find out their exact policy (especially the excess) before you sign up.

I am not sure if you will save that much by dumping the car in Wellington and getting a new one in Picton as the longer you hire the car for the cheaper the rate.
