I'm arriving somewhere in NZ for 10 days in mid-October 2005.

My choices of arrival are Auckland and Christchurch -I'll only have time for one island (obviously) and I'm not sure which one I should go for!

I LOVE pretty things (ie. scenery - I'd like to see as much of the mountains, lakes, rivers, etc. as possible) and my budget is not all that high (I need cheap!) Suggestions?

Hi and welcome Shannon. Being a patriotic mainlander myself, I would say the south island hands down. Especially since it is scenery you are after. So if I were in your shoes I would fly to Christchurch and either try and hook up with someone with a car, most of the hostels in ChCh have noticeboards advertising lifts wanted/offered, or jump straight on a bus. 10 days isn't really long enough but places you probably don't want to miss out on are Kaikoura, Westcoast, Queenstown, Te Anau & Milford Sounds, Mount Cook and one of the passes (Arthur's or Lewis).

The north island does have some nice places also. Check out tongariro and waikaremoana they are both magical places and the kauri forests in northland.

Off course how could we forget about Stewart Island :: Photos. Just a shame the people there aren't the friendliest in the country (putting it nicely).
