I will be spending two weeks on the North Island during the middle of June. I will stay in hostels while i'm in cities, but want to do mostly tramping while I'm there. Does anyone have any tips and advice?

It really all depends, you could get a sunny but a cool winters day or you could get a freezing blizzard. Around the Coromandel would be your best bet for winter tramping, I would proberbly avoid the central north island (Tongariro). I am not to sure about Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera National Park, you may like to send the local DoC office a email and ask them ( http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/page.aspx?id=36115 )

I will be there in aug and early sept. I have been looking at a few tracks to do, i am wondering if they are realisitc to do at this time of the year, what the weather will be like and the like. In the north i was thinking of The Great Barrier Forest and Whirinaki Track, and in the south i was thinking of Queen Charlotte Track, Nydia Track, Abel Tasman costal track, Heaphy track, Milford Track, Dusky Track, and Rakiura Track on Stewart Island. I realize i cant possibly do all these while I'm there, but these are the ones that cought my eye. I live and hike near Seattle, so I am used to cold (40F) rain. I thank you for any advise you can give me.

Hi Flyer, the Heaphy, Milford and Dusky Tracks are best avoided as parts of them may be impassable due to snow, you could however walk to the first or second huts, best to contact the local DoC office in Te Anau (Dusky, Milford - fiordlandvc at doc.govt.nz) and Motueka (Heaphy - MotuekaAO at doc.govt.nz). The rest of them are either in areas that get little or no snow. probably fairly cold and wet on Stewart Island at that time of year though and it also gets dark early. The Marlborough Sounds (Nydia, Queen Charlotte Track) is fairly mild all year round as is Great Barrier Island. I would personally do the Abel Tasman Coastal Track in winter to avoid the masses. Not to sure about the Whirinaki Track, I believe it follows a valley so it should be ok.
