Hi,

I have been awarded full scholarship to further study in New Zealand and currently applying for Visa. However, my medical check up shows that My SGOT (AST) and SGPT (ALT) are beyong the limit. I was requested by Immigration officer to re-test on these two components as well as hepatitis C. My second results' reading are getting higher, AST from 46 to 53 (0-40) and ALT from 105 to 130 (0-53).However, Hepatitis-C is non-reactive. May I know will the percentage of being rejected high? Anyone faced by this problem but still able to get the visa?

hep c is the major concern - if negative, should be ok. you may be asked further tests (e.g. ultrasound or MRI of liver to check liver inflammation. wait lang for further instructions from nzis.

Yes I have personally faced this problem and it took my visa a further 3 months and about P9,000.00 pesos (2006 rates) of extra tests for my medical examinations to be cleared.

If you are cleared for hepatitis or any communicable disease you will get your visa, but it will take time and money on your part. So if time is of the essence then you must:

1. ask the immigration office of a timeframe on how long will they appraise you medical;

2.contact your school/NZAID right away and appraise them of the issue regarding timeframe. Schools in NZ starts on Feb so you MIGHT be pressed for time. Ask if you will be able to enrol at the second semester.

If you are an NZAID scholar, I assume you know the mechanics of the scholarship, i.e. you must leave NZ at the end of your scholarship and must not stay away from NZ for a certain amount of time.

don't be upset...think of it as luck that you have discovered that your liver is not 100% at its peak. many people do not know that there is something wrong with their liver until it's too late to take some helpful steps. some people simply die from cardiac issues which could be traced as a complication of a malfunctioning liver (at least that's what my GP told me!).

I meant "must stay away from NZ for a certain amount of time."

Apologies.

Thanks wellingtonianbuddy and Levi...
Levi: Extra test that you meant here was it something about Ultrasound and other test for liver inflammation?

I will be sending my report to immigration office again tomorrow and ask for the timeframe that they are needed for my report assessment so that i will be able to inform international office at the university as well as my supervisor.

P/S: My scholarship is not funded by NZAID but is FRST (New Zealand Foundation for Technology and Research)

Dude - this is how I've beaten the battle with abnormal liver enzymes:

exercise - at least 30 minutes of brisk walking everyday
cut down consumption of meat/totally avoid if you can
no soda/fizzy drinks
drink pureed uncooked carrots (use the blender) diluted with apple juice (sometimes I blend real apples as well)
upon waking up in the morning-drink lots of water right away (studies have shown the bacteria in the mouth are helpful- need to ingest them whilst they are abundant in the morning - yukky but it worked for me- rinsing your mouth first can only kill the bacteria...
drink lots of tea (I use the real dried tea leaves which I source from Chinese/japanese shops.
eat lots of banana
phlebotomy - abnormal liver enzymes come with it high iron load (esp. for men...)- trust me- pa check mo iron content mo, I have arrnged for 500 cc of blood taken every three months
(hence, do not drink multivitamins with iron content in it)
all these worked wonders for me...no guarantee for other though---as the saying goes, to each his own...and I am not a medical specialist so take this info of mine as mere personal experience...

I am unsure of the tests anymore - but I was recommended to a doctor specialist who concluded that my liver abnormality is due to my poor diet and exercise, not from some communicable disease.

So, chalk this up as a lesson for you. Next time you do a medical exam try to diet and/or exercise for a couple of weeks to take out the "toxins."

Hope that you can still get the scholarship if you are unable to enrol for the first semester. Best of luck.

AllanDelon1990:

You said you were checked for HepC, but what about A or B. You can have chronic HepB for years, without obvious symptoms, and this could give rise to your elevated blood levels.

Not a doctor or medical expert! Just my $0.02 worth.
