Hi guys,
I'm a student from Germany and I wanna go on a trip to New Zealand as soon as possible. However, I won't be able to do so until my next longer holidays, which means from August to October. The thing I'm worried about is whether it is recommendable to visit New Zealand during winter/spring in the first place. Otherwise, I would have to wait until February 2006. Who can tell me anything about possible disadvantages as concerns outdoor activities, hiking and the climate in general? Or are there even benefits cause there wouldn't be as many tourists? You'd really help me a lot by giving me some information.
Thanks a lot,
Arne |

I was in NZ from very late March through early June. I'd definately recomend going at this time, it's autumn and the colors are changing. The crowds are mostly gone at this time, so hostels are usually easy to come by and tours are cheaper and less crowded. We hit great weather touring both islands... only 4 days of light rain... 2 of which were in Milford Sound, got to see Milford/Queenstown with and without snow! I had a 12kg pack, and got by just fine with thermals on under my pants and light jacket. Might have been a bit warmer with more cloths, but it wasn't so bad. heh... Oh, and I think there are fewer sand flies.
I have heard bad stories about going in the summer with respect to weather (rainy), accomodation (must book over a week in advance = no flexibility), and tours (packed)... but I wasn't there to experience any of that.
love,
