Mr. Green
hello all
just found this website after many months of researching and am looking to set up an email, instant message correspondance with people in order to further educate myself about New Zealand and being a woman traveling alone there.
I'm 31 years old, married, and have never been outside the continental unites states.Told ya I was green. What can I say, the wise old Blue Ridge Mountains of central Virginia has been my home for the last 10 years and I have had some lessons that needed learning. Being a new home owner, my finances are tight, but I plan on starting a family this year and, well I'm sure you'll all understand why it makes sense for me to do this trip now.
At any rate, I am planning a solo trip to New Zealand in mid April for about 2-3 weeks. My primary goal, as an amateur photographer, is to take tons of pictures of the land and people, specifically the Maori culture. Possible plans for a photojournal publication wait for me upon returning to the states. I plan on staying mostly at hostels, would like to tramp A LITTLE bit , but not full on (if that makes any sense).
So I need help. Best way to book a flight, dealing with customs, tips on being a woman traveling alone in NZ, the works. I plan on spending most of time on the North Island, as I do have a good friend in Wellington whom I will be doing some photography work with the first week I am there.
If anyone is interested in seeing some of my image work you can go here http://www.fotolog.net/angel_of_the_odd I also happen to be a singer/songwriter in a rock electronic band which you can check out by going here: http://www.clarequilty.com/
Any info would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at angeloftheodd02@yahoo.com
Thanks
Jenn

Hey Jenn, I saw your stuff and it looks great, as do you! It's fun to see that their are open-minded americans (as you must know your international image isn't the greatest!) Anyways! I'm going to New Zealand in 2 weeks and staying there for a month and a half, I'll be doing both north and south Island, so if you like I could tell you the best spots according to me once I return. But from what I read, if you want to photograph the Maori, the north Island is your best bet, probably around Auckland and Rotorua. For booking flights, check out the Air New Zealand web site www.airnewzealand.com and check for deals from the US, most deals will be from the west coast, but usually a ticket from east to west coast is fairly cheap! I'm from Montreal ( Canadian East Coast) and got a ticket for 200$ to Vancouver and then a 900$ ticket with a deal on the Air New Zealand site so check that out! The customs in NZ seem tough on foreign foods, wildlife, plants, etc... They check your camping gear too...but trust me they cannot be as paranoid as your US customs (they once tought I had explosives in my watch?!?!!!) as For being a woman travelling alone in NZ, well there are good guide books on New Zealand and they usually have a section on that. My advice to you is not to hitchhike alone and Make some friends once there! And well for anything else this site as alot of answers to any questions you might have... The site administrator Garry is pretty knowledgeable on his country! Enjoy your trip!
Max
(hope my english is not too bad, I'm mostly french!)
