| if you remain in nz for a specific number of days for those 2 years ( like just going out for short holidays) and don't commit any crimes and you dont give them reason to revoke it, then you become a permanent resident for life unless you voluntarily give it up or die. after 5 years as permanent resident then you have an option to apply for citizenship. |

Mechanics of permanent residency:
1. you know the difference between a visa and a permit, right?
2. now, you get permanent residency which consists of a residency permit (indefinite) and returning resident's visa (valid 2 years).
3. During that two years you can come and go to nz as you please. If you don't stay in nz within the majority of that two years, then your residency might be revoked.
4. Otherwise, if you stay in nz for majority of that two years, they will give you now an indefinite returning resident's visa, which means you can come and go to nz as you please but still retain permanent residency all through your life.
Hope that clears the smoke a bit.
Say, have you gone to www.expatexposed.com? Lots of americans in the forums - that site might open you eyes to a lot of things and issues for americans here in nz. |
