I am a PR here in NZ for more than 2 years now with a decent job.

But now I am thinking of going back home. Life here is so laid-back. At first it was exciting but now it gets boring. Even my children are thinking of going back home. I understand there is a great future ahead of us here. But life seems so slow here.

I am really confused.

Please help.

Hi ricob,

Your future and that of your family are in your hands now. If you think such decision would be beneficial for your family then do it, as long as you dont regret whatever the consequences may be.

You should be happy and thankful that you have achieved and gained your PR already, as others are not so lucky, and some are still striving to get one. That should put something in perspective.

Very Happy

ako, pinaka enjoy ko dito eh yung weather, malamig kasi. second, yung exchange rate Very Happy,

wala din pressure sa work (tsaka we're earning more than enough, plus savings without the stress compared sa pinas). my wife and I are planning to go back to university soon, isa pa yun na mahirap gawin sa pinas.

cheers!

* sali ako ke chrisv pag magpa garage sale ka! Wink

It so ironic that we always think the grass is always greener on the other side.

When we were in the Philippines, we wondered how it is to live in a "first world country" such as New Zealand. We spent countless time, work, effort and finances just to get here.

We sublimated our Filipino tendencies to blend in. We convinced our kids we did this for them - "to give you a better future and experience a world-class education."

Problem is, we migrants expect that we have the same life we had in the Philippines when we live here in NZ only to realize later on that it's a whole different life around here.

We were used to going to sophisticated malls, hired help and nannies, being the top dog on the job. We are not used to wide open spaces, crammed and dotty-looking shopping centres, looking out for our kids on our own, and going back to square one in terms of our professional life.

Think about it - what was the main reason why you guys migrated? To have "fun"?

That wasn't on the agenda, I bet. I think you made the decision to migrate on more serious grounds - having "fun" wasn't on the list of reasons. Luckily, you were granted permanent residency.

Have a more serious talk with your kids - is there a more pressing reason for them not "enjoying" their life here in NZ? Is everything all right at school? Have they easily made friends here (Kiwis, Pinoys and those from other races)?

I think you will see the light once you talk to your kids about it.

Sometimes, our kids are very sensitive to the emotions their adults emanate. If they see that their parents aren't having the time of their lives here, then it is sublimated in their behaviour.

Are you having the time of your life here in NZ or are you burying some frustration and/or resentment that children, bless their tender hearts, could guess?

Also, would your business in the Philippines take care of the benefits you currently enjoy here in NZ, most especially free education and healthcare?

Are you sure that your business, a 24-hour concern, will take care of your basic needs? Will you still have time for your kids or will you just rely on household help to take care of them while you take care of the business?

Whatever you do, the best thing to do right now is to cover all your bases.

You said you have your PR for two years already. You are now eligible for the "returning residents visa," meaning that your visa and permit to enter and leave NZ is now "permanent and indefinite."

You can leave NZ and stay in the Philippines as long as you like and still be considered a permanent resident when you decide to return here to NZ.

Staying in the Philippines on an indefinite returning resident's visa will guarantee that you won't lose your status once you and/or your family members decide to return here in NZ after a long stay away.

Good luck and I hope you make the best decision for your family.

Due to NZ's small population, this country is really very provincial. With all the pluses and minuses that go along with rural life anywhere in the world. Excitement isn't this country's strong suit, by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn't have the chaos - and the accompanying colorful character - that we're used to in the Philippines. Medyo blah.

You couldn't pay me enough money to stay here if I was in my 20s. Pero, after career burn-out in the Philippines, I guess "probinsya" ang hinanap ko. Not sure if I'll stay here for good (been here for only a year) or go back home ('pinas is still "home" for me) eventually. I like it now pero, I can't discount the very real possibility that I will grow a little tired of too much "peace and quiet."

Siguro, depende talaga kung ano hinahanap mo sa buhay at a particular stage in your life. But, I can understand your yearning for home. Ang puno't dulo niyan is, after all the considerations - financial, time, effort in migrating, etc. - you have to be in a place/country kung saan panatag ang loob mo. Otherwise, it's like choosing to be stuck with a girlfriend you don't like anymore because "masyadong marami nang pinagsamahan" or, a job you hate dahil may utang na loob ka sa boss mo.

Baka makatulong yun. suggestion only, take it or leave it po.

Anyone who is not humble enough to accept what can not be changed and to start from nothing again will never learn to love New Zealand, and this is the truth Embarassed
