Hey, I'm coming to New Zealand int less than 4 weeks and I'm still trying to find the best way of travelling around! My options are : 1. Renting a Car for 1 month (1400$+gas) which I'd split the cost with my friend...oh and by the way, what's the cost of 1 liter of Gasoline?! 2. Buying a very cheap car then maybe selling it after! (1000$ or less!+gas) 3. Getting a Flexipass... I would need a pass where I could travel freely around all of New Zealand (North and South Island)...the 60 hour pass doesn't seem enough and the other passes don't have a description! Shocked but I'd estimate that at around 650$. 4. There's another pass which you can get for 1 month but cost 1000$!!!! Confused 5. Any suggestions?!

Please help me! Very Happy Consider that I'm a 19 y.o. Male travelling with a 23 y.o. Female for a little more that 1 month! Thanks, Merci, Danke, Gracias whatever suits best!

Depends on how long you are going to be here for? If only a month or two I would hire a car and save the hassels of selling it and also cutting your holiday short by looking for one and then selling it at the end, have a look at www.escaperentals.co.nz/pricing.asp (site currently down) and maybe hire a van and save on accommodation. If you are going to be here longer I would take the gamble and by a cheap one, get 3rd party insurance and perhaps join the AA for breakdown coverage. Either way it is best going by car as there are lots of places buses don't go to.

Hello Gerry,

I have the same question, but since I am going alone for one month, so I don't think it is a good way for me to drive all the way alone, so maybe the bus is better. but I can't decide between magic travellers and intercity. magic sounds to me all the iteniries are fixed. I have to stay on their planned pass. intercity (flex-pass) sounds more flexible and cheaper, but I don't know where they are going to pick me up, in general? in the city/villeage? bus stop? far/close to hostels/attractions? convenient to go to the tracks/national parks?

Thank you very much in advance for the answer.

I, again, am in a similar situation.

My wife and I will be in NZ in Feb/Mar and we're wondering wether we should get a bus pass ahead of time or just wait and get one where we need to while we are there. We are hiking/camping for a month. Would we save a lot of money buying a flexible pass ahead of time?

Thanx.

Well after checking everything out, the best way to travel for me is by renting a car, I negotiated a deal for 25$ per day for 28 days which comes to 700$ divided in two with my parter, so 350$ for a month! The bus pass doesn't come close... while searching for travelling methods I found that if 25 y.o. or more renting a campervan could be a good option, there are some at 90$ per day in the high season ( and some at 40$ per day in the low!) The flexipass seems good if you take one of the deals, the time ones (like 40-50-60 hours) seem to be more complicated (you need to estimate your travel time and it's not always easy) As for redsandal, maybe if your travelling on the same path as me you could hop on our rental car! I'm travelling with a 23 y.o. woman, she is really fun, we work together at a club! Anyways, enjoy your trips!
