Must sees in December - January!!!

Hi My friend and I will be travelling to NZ at the beginning of December for 4 weeks holiday. We will be arriving at Aukland Airport and will be travelling towards the South Island for the First two weeks (arriving 11th) until the 24th December where we will be staying at a guest house in Aukland. Where are the best places to go in the first two weeks (south Island) and then the Second two weeks (North Island around Aukland). We don't want to be runing all over the place but would like a couple of "Must Sees" where we should travel to then we can see if anything takes our fancy on the way Would be gratefull for as much info as possible!!! We would also be staying for New Years eve in Aukland! Whats the best type of party? Beach Party with grill? Or any other suggestions??? Paul
