Hi,
I received my invitation to apply for a WTR last April 16, 2008 and will be submitting our passports and other documents next month. I have these questions and I hope I could get answers through this forum since I was told by my agent that his job was already finished when I received the invitation to apply for a WTR
1) I was given a 12-month deferral period. When does this 12-month deferral period start ? on April 16, 2008 or from the date I will be issued a WTR ? By the way, I was given until July 18, 2008 to submit our passports and other documents.
2) I work as an accountant here in Manila for more than 10 years. My agent mentioned before that I need to work accounting related job in NZ for three months during the 12-month deferral period. Does this rule still applicable now ? I plan to go to NZ on February 2009. In your honest opinion, can I find a job within a month? My husband and my three kids plan to join me on March 2009 when school ends and back to Manila by June 2009.
3) After working for 3 months, what is the next thing to do ? Can I leave NZ then and go back to Manila? My husband can't join me in NZ because he has to attend to our business and my kids need to finish their secondary studies here .

I think, if I am not mistaken your deferral period is 9 months. The deferral period starts when you enter New Zealand. Your agent has added the 3 months (maximum) that you can stay in the Philippines that will not be counted as part of the 9 months deferral period. The 3 months start from the date your visa is approved or stamped in your passport. It is up to you whether or not to use the 3 months. But if you only used 2 months, the one month remaining will not be added to your 9 months.
In my honest opinion, it is not advisable to defer your travel to NZ to Feb 09. You can't be too sure on the period of time that you would be able to find your skills-related employment. It could be 3 wks, 2 months, 5 months, for some it could take 1 year. There were some who were able to use the 2 years deferral period (this used to be the policy for those who lodged applications before 21 Dec 2005. There were also some with a 2-yr deferral period who left NZ without gaining their residence. So if I were you I will come to NZ at the earliest possible to lessen the pressure of searching for a job that could give you the PR status.
At this point in time, I think you and your husband have to think and discuss what to do about your business and what your priorities are in life. When you move to NZ you will find how different your situations are. There are a lot to give up but there are also a lot to gain. |

Hi Hane,
Thanks for your immediate reply and advice. Honestly, I am not prepared to leave for NZ this year but I have to sacrifice. You are right, there is a lot to give up but there is a lot to gain.
