I'm looking to spend a month or two in New Zealand for May and June.
Just looking for some advice:
I'm planning to fly into Auckland, crash for a couple nights there (recover from jetlag, i'm flying from New York) and figure out my plans.
I have two competing plans.
First - I was thinking of buying a used car in Auckland, and driving around the country, making my own plans and having true flexibility to go hiking and spend time everywhere. Because this is the fall there, I was thinking of going directly south, and then looping back up to the North Island as it gets colder. My biggest concern with this is the driving on the left side, the driving conditions, and how safe it would be traveling alone that way (not sure if I can get someone to come along). This seems like the best way to do this whole thing.
The other thing I was thinking of, was doing a bus tour. But it seems like you lose a lot of flexbility that way. But it would relieve my concerns about traveling alone and dealing with possibly bad weather.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a new traveler?
Also, is it frowned upon to camp out in a car, if i choose that way.
thanks for any help. |

I like having the freedom of having a car or better yet a van to sleep in. Yeah you can sleep in it, you may get a tap on the window from a cop in towns or cities but just play ignorant, they will just tell you off or tell you to move along if any thing. I wouldn't worry to much about safety, although people have been beaten and robbed while sleeping in their car/van before but it's rare. Just remember the driver is always next to the center line, the same as driving in your country. Unfortunately we had a few fatal accidents of the last year off tourists driving on the wrong side.
Check out the noticeboards at the various hostels round Auckland, you often see signs for traveling companions.
But is one or two month really long enough? I mean it may take a week to buy a car and another week or longer to sell it. Maybe a mix between hire car and bus? |
