I am coming to New Zealand for the month of January and part of February. I am a pretty experienced backpacker and hiker and have been kicking around the idea of whether or not I should bring a one man tent. I am traveling alone and dont really have much of a plan except the bookings i made for the Kepler and Routeburn.
The reason I am considering a tent is mostly a security issue. I dont really know where I am going to be going, and I know I'll be traveling around alot... so having a tent means to me that I have my house with me. As long as you are away from a city, can you just kinda camp anywhere? Its not that way in the US and I was hoping to find somewhere that is. Also, the hut system sounds awesome... but I get anxiety thinking about not carrying a tent because I alway have one when i backpack. I dont want to get stuck in a bad storm between two hut and be stuck, or not be able to find a bunk in a hut.
I know that was alot, but what do you think?
Thanks

Hi Chris, yeah its a weight vs convenience. You will find the hut system brilliant and if you do a lesser used track you will probably regret bringing your tent, however tracks like the great walks a tent saves staying in a crowded hut.
If I were you I would bring it and just store it in a nearby hostel if you decide to do a walk and stay in huts. No you can't really camp where you please except for the national parks (x metres from the track), however there are plenty of places out in the country side where no one really cares if you camp or not. Plenty of farmers will also let you camp "down by the river" if you ask them nicely and they are not lambing. |
