| Hey all- im a college student from the US, and im going to be studying in New Zealand in 05 for a semester, but of course, im going to be leaving about a month early to do some serious hiking. Is hitchhiking legal in NZ? Is it safe? Anything else i should know? The only reason is that i want to see as much of that beautiful place as possibble, but im a little short on time. Thanks for your help. |

Hi HikerDave, yeah it is legal, except on motorways. It is fairly safe, very rearly will you hear about someone getting robbed, and I can only remember one instance of a hitchhiker murdered and I believe she knew the person that picked her up, gang related I think.
I hitched around various parts of New Zealand about 10 years ago and found it very easy, I tried it again about 2 years ago and found it much more difficult. I have also noticed a large decrease in hitchhikers on our roads, It seems people are getting more paranoid. |

| Maybe a good option would be to check out http://www.easyhitcher.com/ - you may be able to find a driver who is heading in the same direction as you. As far as I can see the website is new and doesn't have many (if any) users yet, but give it a go. |

| I watched a thing on TV here a few weeks ago, I think it was called "dying for a ride". Basically it detailed the stories of 4 hitchhikers killed in New Zealand (only one male murdered and that was over 20 years ago). It portrayed hitching as dangerous and risky. Well 4 murders in how many thousands if not millions of hitchhikers over the years? It was a typical sensationalised documentary. Still I would be wary if I was a female hitching alone as you would be in lots of situations. |
