Hello all, great website you have here, still looking through it all for as much info as I can get.

I plan on coming to New Zealand, from Canada, with 1-2 friends in January-February. Never been to New Zealand nor have we done any serious hiking/tramping. We plan on staying for about 4 weeks and would like to see as much as possible in that time, wanting to tramp as much as we can, but we know we'll have to take a bus/train/etc. to get across some of the distances to be able to get around as much as we want.

As we do more research I know we'll find more spots we specificlly want to see and experience. I saw on the home page about hiking a volcano, that really excited me, and I know one of my friends would like to do some surfing, but I was hoping for some suggestions on great places to visit.

Edit: Also I forgot to ask about costs, still somewhat clueless about how much a 4 week stay with tramping as much as possible, staying in hostels, camping, and that lifestyle while here would cost us.

Any other info that might be helpful for us would be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks in advance,
James

Hi James.

We're also tramping in NZ (SI) in Jan 08.
We did some great (not "Great") walks with our boys about 5 years back.

The Abel Tasman was good fun and very different from the alpine walks. A bit crowded though, being a Great Walk.

Some friends liked the Kepler Track.

Tongariro Crossing is a great day walk on the North Island. Taranaki (Mt Egmont) also looks interesting.

That's the easier walks we've done.
The Rees/Dart and Wilkin/Young walks you might like to consider if your party has some experience, as they have tough sections.

HTH,
Andrew
