my wife is now gathering all necessary documents for her work visa application, and also for our 2 year old son visit visa, under my sponsorship.
provided that i have to look for a flat for us before my wife and son arrived, do i have to look for a house with 2 rooms? one for me together with my wife, and the other one is for my son? or a big one room that will fit us is enough? is new zealand has a strict house rules that a child must have a seperate room aside from their parents room?

No, there is no rules in NZ that you cannot all squeeze into one big bedroom. It makes sense as your son is only 2 years old.
However, your decision should be on how much you can afford to rent and the long-term situation as your son is growing up quickly. That is just my opinion.
