New Zealand open to Pinoy workers
By Katrina Mennen A. Valdez Reporter
New Zealand is looking at the Philippines as a major source of skilled and unskilled workers, a diplomat said Friday.
“New Zealand is open for business,” Steve McCombie told The Manila Times in an exclusive roundtable interview. He is the first secretary and deputy head of mission at the New Zealand Embassy in Manila.
McCombie said New Zealand faces a labor shortage, which is an opportunity for Filipinos. Job openings exist in telecommunications, information-communication technology and agriculture for skilled workers, he added. Plus, New Zealand is the world’s fifth-largest designer and producer of power and super yachts, and so there is also demand for civil, mechanical, chemical, automotive and electrical engineers.
Even though New Zealanders enjoy a wide range of comprehensive health-care services, the lack of professionals who would provide these services is a mounting setback, McCombie said. This sector needs nurses, radiologists and general practitioners.
For unskilled workers, New Zealand requires seasonal fruit pickers, he added. There is little demand, if any, for domestic helpers in that country.
More information about job opportunities is available from the website of Immigration New Zealand, www.immigration.govt.nz.
“Filipinos are a good preference. Language-wise, there will be no problem, because [they] are also known worldwide as one of the most hardworking employees,” McCombie said.
He noted that New Zealand’s population of 4.1 million is aging, saying there are more sheep in that country with about 41 million.
“That is why [we] have to import [workers]. While other Asean nationals are also welcome, Filipinos are most preferred since many of [them] are already highly skilled,” he said. Asean or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a grouping of 10 countries—the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia and Brunei.
Already, there is a thriving Filipino community in New Zealand, McCombie said, adding that there are up to 25,000 Filipinos permanently residing there. There is even a Filipino community newspaper in Auckland, one of the major cities. He said the Filipino immigrants have assimilated well into their multicultural society.
McCombie added that the relationship between his country and the Philippines is “warm and positive.” He said the number of visas issued by the New Zealand Embassy in Manila grew 340 percent in the last five years, from 3,400 issued annually to about 11,800 this year.
Also, the Philippines and New Zealand recently signed an air-services agreement, which McCombie said is expected to boost tourism and trade. When direct flights will start is up to the airlines, though, he added. |

I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP GUYS....
I am Mareza Ambat, 22 years old, from the Philippines..
I am a service associate here at the Bank of the Philippine Islands for 2 years and 6 months.. i really want to awork in NZ. I have hired a immgration agency to help me process my papers and documents..
I have passed my NZQA last november and got the result last December 20 with level 6. So the agency told me that I have to find a job offer before I proceed to EOI.
Now I am experiencing a dilemna because I have been applying online(i barely sleep) and they are rejecting all my application which is really FRUSTRATING.............
i REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO.. this forum helps me a lot but i also got envious of those who become successful..well inspired would be the right term.. I know that I should be patient.. everybody tells me that and a lot of prayers is required...
I hope somebody could help me... [/quote] |

Hi Mareza,
I think the agency knows that you wont pass the EOI stage even before your NZQA. They just wanted to give you hopes so you will get their services and make money from you. Tyak malaki na rin ang binayad mo sa kanila.
Almost everyone now needs a job offer to be selected from the EOI pool.
To be selected from the pool in year 2004-2005, you only needed 100 points, you'll get 100 pts if you were near 30 years old with 10 years experience, and a college graduate. But now it's different, it's 140 points (which is almost impossible for most Filipinos). Getting a job offer here (without work visa/ permit) is very hard, also almost impossible, unless you're a highly skilled engineer or IT. Kahit na makakuha ka ng job offer, kailangang patunayan pa rin ng kompanya na walang available NZ worker sa position na un.
I think the best for you is try other countries, or wait until the NZ immigration dropped its required points. Right now, you cannot do much. |

Not that I am belittling the power of prayer but you also need to take stock of what you have at the moment before you undertake a very ardrous and costly task (i.e. migration).
I will be very honest and frank with you. With your current employment and limited skills there is a very small chance for you to acquire residency in NZ or be hired by any NZ employer.
According to nz immigration, they will grant permanent residency and/or a working visa if you acquired specialist, technical or managerial employment in new zealand. With your job title, I can guess that you perform administrative and general office skills - which in my book is not specialized or technical. Honestly, medyo tagilid ka talaga ngayon.
Pero, bata ka pa naman, you are only 22 years old at may chance ka pa mag-migrate using other means.
Hope you don't mind my comments. Good luck! |

hi mareza,
this is not to discourage you in anyway in pursuing your dream in NZ but I agree with levi and alex. it is too impossible for you to migrate to NZ at this stage esp. the required points now is quite high. what others did as alternative is they apply for tourist in NZ and apply for job.
in my case I lodge my EOI last Feb. 2005 where the reqd points is only 100, i finished a 5 year course, i have 10+ years experience in engineering and i am 30+ y.o. but until now i'm still here in Philippines, this will proved that migrating to NZ is not an easy thing.
just my opinion too, no offense meant. _________________ -----------------------------

I know of one very good consultant in Auckland who can advise those who want to work in NZ. He is Jackson. You can email him at kc.law08@yahoo.com. He is very knowledgeable and he has a greatly helped me and my friends to find jobs and process the work visas and permits.
All the best.
Regards,

If you need help on any immigration issues, you may contact Jackson who works in a law firm in auckland. He is very helpful and knowledgeable to help you in your immigration process. He can be reached at kc.law08@yahoo.com. He has helped nurses, midwives, vehicle mechanics, chefs and IT professionals to get jobs.
Good luck.
