Hi,
I'm from the UK and will be arriving in New Zealand in April for up to 6 months. I want to hike as many tracks as possible in this time! The plan is to start in Fiordland and gradually work my way North, taking in all the tracks that can be tramped at this time of year.
Is anyone else going to be out hiking this winter? Once the snow hits I'm not sure how safe it is to be tramping by myself. In case there's anyone else out there thinking about a similar adventure, I thought I'd let you know that there will be at least one other person out braving the cold!
Hoping to see as many of you as possible on the tracks!

Hi Tom, fellow NZ-travellers,
I'm Belgian, 29, and travelling NZ for a few weeks beginning of April (first on my own, later with my brother) and I'd like to tramp Milford.
The guided walk is terribly expensive, but I'm not at all keen to 'freedom walk' on my own.
My 'window' is from the 6th untill the 15th... not very flexible, I know... I'll probably be lucky if I'm able to make hut reservations at such short notice.
Anyone care to join me?

Hi there ... I'm a 23 year old from Canada looking for tramping partner(s) for single day or multi-day tramps on the North or South Island during June, July and August 2007. Let me know if you are around during that time!

I too think that some of the great walks are closed. I have put a link to the Department of Conservation (Doc) who look after the walking tracks in New Zealand.
You could look at going to walks that are coastal eg Queen Charlotte, Abel Tasman, otherwise there are a range of other walks you can look into. You can contact the Doc office that runs the walk for more information about the walks and maybe ask for suggestions as they will be aware of what happens to the walks during the year, condition, best options for winter. |
