Hi
I am going to be backpacking from August 2006 for probably around 2 and half years to 3 years.
Currently planning to go to NZ, Australia, Fiji and other islands - depending costs and Thailand.
I have found out that to apply for a working travel visa to NZ you have to be in the country you live in (UK - me). And use the visa within 12 months, which is fair enough. I was planning to start in Australia for a year, but after finding out the above information, I am going to start in NZ. Otherwise I would have to cut short my time in Oz. I just wondered if other backpackers have been in this situation?
I know this isn't a Australia backpackers site, but it seems to have various questions of different countries, so thought I would ask.
I have yet to find any thing similar to Australia (about visa rules - having to be in the country you live in to apply/use it within 12 months), but maybe I have looked in the wrong places? So I am assuming I can apply for my visa anytime, and it starts when I enter the country, no deadline?
Anyway, thanks for reading, even better if you can help me.
Thanks. |

Hi Dolphin, just asked partner who got one for Australia and she said you need to apply in your home country and it starts when you enter the county.
And also from http://www.immi.gov.au/faq/visiting/visiting03.htm
"The first Working Holiday visa cannot be granted in Australia. Applications for the first Working Holiday visa must be made overseas. As well, if you hold a particular kind of passport, you must apply from within that country"
"A Working Holiday visa gives you 12 months to travel to Australia from the date the visa is granted, and allows you to stay in Australia for 12 months from the date you first enter Australia." |

This is really annoying, Garry! Thanks for the info, just seems I have to cut short one of the 12 months trip.
I hadn't read about that, in fact I searched all over that website to see if the rules is the same as NZ.
Oh well, not sure what to do now. |

Thanks Garry, I think I must have been looking at a different set of instructions to what you have given me. Brilliant news.
Now I can stopping worrying about it. You have made my day.
Thanks. |

| Curious to know why the pay is less in NZ than Australia. Can someone kindly explain to me as I am planning to come over and work in NZ. |
