fishing in NZ

Hi! My friend and I are coming to NZ to do some backpacking in late March. We will be parting ways after a week and then I'll be on my own. I love to fly fish and would like to do so while in NZ. Looking on the internet, its appears getting a guide is quite expensive. Do I go on my own? If so, where? Should I sell my dog (joke) and get a guide for a day? Suggestions?

Yeah I would just go on your own. You might want to pick up a book from Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/104-9826500-9093515?url=index%3Dblended&field-keywords=fishing+new+zealand&Go.x=18&Go.y=15 ), there are hundreds of excellent fishing rivers and lakes in New Zealand. Also when you arrive here just pop into one of the many fishing stores and ask, Mikes in Christchurch is very helpful ( http://mikesfishing.com/home.asp ), you may like to ask at his forum.
