Hi there first timer to this forum to any really.

My question is inregard to motor home Free camping. We will be in the south island first 2 weeks of Jan 06 and are hoping to park our MH in various locations close to good fishing in rivers and lakes. Also hoping to get away from the crowds.

Is this possible as i am having trouble finding much info on the web. Are there guide books maps etc available for such things. Or is there a detailed map of the south island available for sale anywhere via the web.

Thanks in advance

Dean

Hi Dean, your best bet is to camp at the start or end of hiking tracks, they have car parks (usually just a grass field) and possibly toilets and some are close by to good fishing rivers. One place where I used to park up years ago was at the end of Lake Ohau and fish the hopkins and lake Ohau for trout and landlocked salmon.

Topo maps are the best, when you get here go to the Christchurch Public Library and in the NZ section they have the entire county. Just look on the westcoast and you will see lots of roads heading towards the alps, just follow one of those and you are bound to find somewhere to park up for the night.

You can have a look at http://www.nztopoonline.linz.govt.nz/ but it is slow and cumbersome to use.
