Subject: First time backpacker questions IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I have a few questions:
- I am planning to work/travel in New Zealand starting in March for 2-3 months. I was wondering if it is worth it to go through a travel organization such as BUNAC or CIEE since I am a first time backpacker.
- Is it as easy as sounds to find temporary work in New Zealand?
- Is there a site for backpackers that would enable me to get in contact with other backpackers that might be traveling at the same time as me?
Thanx for any help!

Message: "Is it as easy as sounds to find temporary work in New Zealand", it depends on what sort of experience you have. If you are prepared to do anything then you shouldn't have to many problems getting factory work or something similar in the main cities. I have met quite a few travellers who have gotten work through http://www.yellow.co.nz/site/coverstaffinternational/ (Christchurch), http://www.adecco.co.nz/index.html and http://www.manpower.co.nz more temp agencys at http://www.yellowpages.co.nz/all-categories/business-services/personnel/labour-hire/. If all else fails you could fall back on fruit picking, proberbly Kerikeri would be the best bet at that time of year (http://www.kerikeri.net/work/backpackers.htm. Also if you just want to some work for accommodation and food you could go wwoofing (http://www.wwoof.co.nz/.
You could try posting a message on lonley planets thorn tree (http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=10 I am about to put up a classified ad section on this site with a section on travel partners but I don't think I will have it up by then as I am about to head on holiday for a few weeks. Most of the bigger hostels in the main cities have noticeboards and there are usually quite a few notices for travel partners wanted.
I have no experience in dealing with either BUNAC or CIEE so can't really comment on them but New Zealand is the perfect country for a first time backpacker, you will meet plenty of others when you arrive here in the same boat as yourself.

Message: Allan I think you mean the Bay of Islands. I lived up there for about a year at a little bay on the Purerua penisular. There are some really nice subtropical beaches and good diving. But if time and money are limited I would proberbly by pass it and go to the coromandel instead (http://www.thecoromandel.com/.

Message: Hi,
I am considering backpacking from about october/november until about june/july this/next year and have some questions about New Zealand...
First of all, whats it like backpacking in New Zealand? Is it backpacker friendly?
Second off, are there a lot of places to camp both officially (on campsites) and off-campsite area's?
Whats the weather like in New Zealand throughout the year?
and finally, what places are best to avoid and what places are best to visit?
Thank you for your time in answering these questions...

Message: Yo, David,
I've just been getting my tickets arranged for a couple month stay in NZ - flying out on March 11 to Auckland. If you're gonna be around about then, I'm going over solo and would be happy to have a bit of company.
I don't really have any plans yet, but I'm up for pretty much anything. I was thinking, try to wwoof a bit and mostly just see the Islands.
Email me if you're interested!

Message: How's it going?
How cold does it get in July and Auguest. Can I camp very easily or does it rain a lot. I will be traveling both islands and I wanted to see if I could get some questions answered. Also what is the food cost if I plan to make a lot of pasta and cheep foods? Basically, how much should I bring for 2 months in NZ$? Any information is greatly appreciated.
