Aspiring National Park
Part of the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area, Mt Aspiring national park is predominately a alpine region.
The park preserves over 355,518 hectares of natural beauty and offers some excellent walks within its boundaries it is also a ideal playground for mountaineers.
The alpine characteristics of Mt Aspiring national park largely influences the fauna and flora found within this park. Beech is the dominant forest type although at lower altitudes pockets of mixed podocarp/beech forests may also be found. Above the bush-line are tussocks, mountain buttercups and herb fields.
There is a rich variety of bird life in this national park, species you are most likely to see and hear are rifleman's, robins, bellbirds, yellow crowned parakeets, yellow heads, tomtits, fantails, whios and kereru. The alpine regions are home to the rock wren and the kea . At night native bats (New Zealand's only native land mammals) and moreporks may be seen and heard.
