Latin Name: Porphyrio mantelli hochstetteri
Category: Endemic
Status: Endangered
Characteristics: 63cm, flightless
Distribution: Wild population of 150 in the Murchison range of Fiordland. Birds recently released on the offshore Islands of Tiritiri, Matangi, Mana, Kapiti and Maud Island.
Food: Shoots and stems of red tussock, seeds, berries and rhizomes of ferns.
Nest: Built in tussock
