Common Name: Kokako
Latin Name: Callaeas cinerea wilsoni
Category: Endemic
Status: Rare and Endangered
Characteristics: 38 cm, blue wattles
Distribution: Found only in unmodified mixed podocarp forest of the North Island, and on the offshore Islands Little Barrier, Kapiti and Tiritiri Matangi Islands. The South Island kokako which hasn't been spotted in more than 30 years was often described as one of the most distinctive of New Zealand birds with its call being described as "haunting and unforgettable".
Food: Fruits, flowers and foliage and occasionally eating insects.
