Opotiki to Waihau
The road to Waihau from Opotiki hugs the coastline winding over headlands and down into picturesque little bays. On a hot summer's day, you can stop at Te Kaha, a sizeable beach which is safe for swimming. In yesteryear, Te Kaha was a whaling town but nowadays it is a popular place to fish or launch a boat. You can also camp at the Te Kaha Holiday Park. Further along the road, Waihau is a quaint, little bay. The town rests along a crescent shaped bay with a foreshore which is ideal for foraging for shellfishing or landing a flatfish. There's a camping ground just infront of the beach. While you're here check out the local marae and you'll be impressed with the carvings which adorn the Tukaki meeting House. The carvings are a coming together of 2 cultures with Maori figures intermingled with Christian motifs.
