This place is cheap and central but don't expect much else. Carpets and decor are dilapidated, my twin room featured windows that didn't close (in winter!), taps that did not turn off and bed balanced on bricks. The four nights I was there people ran amok in the corridors until 4 or 5 am. The staff messed up my ski booking even though it was a basic package and had to refund me money after overcharging me. They knew very little about the packages they were offering.

Hi Stu here from Backpackers Downtown. We remember Nathan staying with us, and unfortunately, he did not give us a chance to rectify his issues before he left our premises. We have listened to Nathan's suggestions and have repaired the necessary problems. We hope our guests find Backpackers Downtown to have the same unique character that we do. Queenstown has a transient population and therefore, a transient staff. We have some great new people working, who, like all new people need an introductory period to the HUGE AMOUNTS of adrenaline activities in Qtown. Our experienced staff (two from Queenstown) are very knowledgeable in all activities. We would love to see you here!!

Hopefully things have changed over the last few years but when I stayed the 'smoking room' was the stoners room, the security was a joke as all the rooms are on the same lock and it was raided twice by the fuzz!

I stayed at Downtown in Dec 2005. The free breakfast, free internet and central location are the only good things about this hostel. It is dirty, smelly and cheap. Not nice at all.

Please don't waste your money. The only thing missing from this place is the vibrating bed. Go across the road to get accommodation. Same price. 100% better.

Do NOT stay here! This hostel is by far the filthiest hole I ever had the misfortune to stay in. Our food was stolen from the kitchen and the staff were no help at all. Heard it is due to be demolished!! The sooner the better. Instead of offering free internet, they should offer a price of $2.00 a night, this still would be overpriced for what this dive has to offer.

I've stayed at this backpackers on my vacation two years in a row. It's not the cleanest, not the nicest, but it's the cheapest around and it gets the job done. I like the staff, you get free internet, free food in the morning, clean sheets and towels, we've never had a problem locking our stuff up and it's seriously half the price of other Queenstown backpackers! If you want a hotel room get a hotel room or pay the same price for another backpackers. If you want a cheap backpackers I'd choose Downtown every time.

great hostel, spent a few months there, the worst thing about it thou is the manager Nate, only like you if your a guy very rude and aggressive! clean sheets vile kitchen and fridges and people have sex in the tv room!!!
