I stayed at the Palace in Nelson in late 1999 for a few days...it was wonderful. The bedroom had a bright, airy feel, and the house was beautiful. The location was good---situated on a little overlook, minutes from the city center. I highly recommend The Palace for those seeking a hostel without the party atmosphere.

I found Tthe Palace diasappointing in fact when I arrived my booking had been crossed out, after previously phoning 2 weeks before to ask for an account number to pay the accomodation in full, and after having booked 2 months prior to phoning to confirm. I see the last review 1999 on the website would seek more recent reviews

Great location and the house is lovely. The guy that runs it is a shocker. Bookd 2 months in advance, re-confirmed about a week before arriving and our booking was lost. Despite having travelled widely this was the first time we encountered BED BUGS. Lots of them. With HUGE teeth. Staff response - "I'm not surprised" (!!!!!). After much discussion, and lots of excuses from the owner about why it wasn't his fault, we were begrudgingly offered a partial refund. I suggest the owner either sell up or go on some customer service training, ASAP. And to people thinking of staying there - go somewhere else.

10/2004-V disappointing. Booked months in advance to ensure room &-due to comment by previous traveler-contacted hostel to confirm booking 3 weeks before arriving. When we turned up booking made for wrong dates (despite confirmation) & no rooms left. One dummy spit later & we had a room-found out in due course it was shared w. bedbugs!Quite a revelation as after 2 yrs in the 3rd World never encountered one. Doesn't say a lot about cleanliness of hostel, which could be improved! Poss. even more surprising than unwanted bed-fellows was reaction of hostel staff 1.not surprised;2.offered no apology;3.did not appear to have firstaid kit for the 50+ bites;4. did not offer compensation & owner indicated the bedbug issue was not his fault. Hostel staff be warned-word of mouth is a powerful thing.
