I stayed here in Nov. 02 and I loved it. The people were super friendly, the view was great and they were very helpful in booking all the things I wanted to do. The only bad thing is that you have to hike up the hill to get there, but if you don't mind a small workout it is well worth it!

My family & I were disgusted when we stepped into this hostel. The matresses were filthy (my son thought he might get a disease as he was the only one to lie on them). The so called bathroom was beyond a joke and had pubic hairs around the toilet (hate to think when it was last cleaned). They pointed out that the hostel across the road was less than 2 yrs old and the hostel next door had been refurbished and that they were going to be demolished - wish they had said on their web site. Needless to say we left and stayed at a motel around the corner for $100 more and 10000% happier.

I liked this place, found the staff friendly and helpful. Maybe the previous reviewer checked in before it was cleaned as I didn't find it messy.

Excellent place to stay. Amazing views. lovely staff & friendly cat:) Top house kitchen a bit crowded but that's a backpackers for you. Lounge views unbelievable.

I would just like to point out that the review by Heather was obviously not meant for Hippo Lodge but the Downtown Backpackers. We do not have a hostel across the road and we are not demolishing anything. I think she has made a mistake as to which hostel she was reviewing, and her comments are consistent with the above lodge which has had demolishin work done to it. Plus there is no record of a Heather booking or cancelling here in April 2006. Thanks.
